Commissioner Erin Knott

knott editErin Knott is a progressive activist. She is a champion of social and economic justice and equality for all. She has extensive experience working on high-impact campaigns involving a combination of legislative, public education and organizing strategies. Erin began her career investing resources and human capital into Kalamazoo’s urban neighborhoods. Her ultimate goal in organizing is for people to realize their own power when they are involved in the struggle for change and win improvement of their lives.

Erin worked at the Vine Neighborhood Association as the Crime Prevention Organizer, before spending eight years with the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC). While at LISC, Erin connected residents, business owners and other stakeholders with resources to revitalize Kalamazoo’s urban neighborhoods and to improve quality of life. Community engagement was key to success, and Erin worked with community members to identify projects and to secure the resources to impact change at the block level. 

Currently, Erin is the Michigan State Director for Enroll America. She previously served as the Michigan Political Director for America Votes and Deputy Director for Michigan Citizen Action. While at Michigan Citizen Action, Erin was afforded the opportunity to work with members of Congress, the state legislature, and volunteer teams across the state. She has forged and strengthened collaborative efforts with advocacy organizations, labor unions, student groups, communities of color, faith-based organizations, and the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities by working in coalitions across all levels.

Erin has made Kalamazoo her home for over twenty years. After graduating from Western Michigan University in 1996, Erin lived in the Vine neighborhood for ten years before she purchased and restored her home in the Douglas neighborhood in 2006. She is a graduate of Leadership Kalamazoo, and has served on a number of community and volunteer organizations including; the Edison Neighborhood Association, Kalamazoo Community Foundation's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Equality Fund, Smartshop Metal Arts Collective, Vine Neighborhood Association, and Vine Ventures, Inc. Erin is the recipient of the 2012 Progressive Leadership “Grassroots Leader” Award. She shares her home with her partner Amy.
