The Department of Parks and Recreation is a vital and integral part of the Kalamazoo Community. The mission of the Parks and Recreation Department is to create a community of neighborhoods where people live, work, and play. We accomplish this by being good stewards of the environment, providing dynamic parks, trails and recreation programs for all citizens and by promoting youth development initiatives in support of healthy families.

Rosters and signed waivers are due by October 9th at 5:00 p.m. Registration is $400 per team. Please see the meeting presentation for complete details.

Upcoming Sports Programs:

Middle School Bowling League

Cost is $53 per person.  Checks made out to AIRWAY LANES. All checks and credit card charges MUST clear before bowler can participate.  Deadline to register is OCTOBER 30TH.

We will transport your student by City vans to Airway Lanes starting the week of NOVEMBER 2nd.  Program runs Weds Nov 2nd – Dec 10th.

When arriving bowlers will get their shoes and a ball and staff will put them in groups on the lanes.   Bowlers may bring their own bowling shoes and bowling ball

Bowlers will get a 20 minute lesson from Airway Lanes staff prior to bowling their game.  Bowlers can be picked up between 4:45 & 5:00 p.m.  Bowling etiquette is expected the entire time at the alley.  City staff and, again if possible, a school staff will be assisting the bowlers as well as monitoring the group.

Saturday December 12th at 9:00 a.m. we will have our bowling roll off (bowling talk for tournament) for bowlers.  Registration will start at 8:30 a.m.  More information will come home later.

Mini – Kickers Soccer

Participants will learn basic drills, skills and game rules; Class size is limited to the first 60 youth to enroll.  T-shirts included. Pre-registration required. Please have your child bring a water bottle.

Who:     Youth ages 5-7

When:  Saturdays, Sept. 26 – Oct. 31, 10:15 – 11:00 a.m.

Where: Mayors’ Riverfront Park, 251 Mills St.                     

Cost:      $39 City resident; $59 Non-City resident

Tiny Tot Tumblers

This is a PARENT /TOT program (a parent must also participate) and is designed to develop basic balance, coordination, strength, and flexibility skills, in a fun atmosphere. It provides an opportunity to develop gymnastic skills through obstacle courses, climbing, jumping, and using music, colors shapes for lots of fun!

Who:   Pre-School, 3-4 years old. Must be three years old at time of registration. 

Where: Youth Development Center, 230 E. Crosstown Parkway

When:  Mondays, 6:30 - 7:15 p.m.

Oct 5 – Nov. 23

Cost:    $32- City residents; $48 - Non-City residents       

Little Tot Soccer

A fun and instructional six-week program for boys and girls, age 3-4.  Participants will learn the basic soccer drills and skills along with the game rules; Class size is limited to the first 60 youth to enroll.  T-shirts included. Moxie Volleyball Skills Camp

This six week camp is intended to serve as an extension of the middle and high school season, and is for players with previous volleyball experience. Led by Marta Lehman, founder and Director of Moxie Volleyball Kalamazoo, student athletes will participate in individual skills and group drills for the first hour of each session.  Scrimmages will dominate the last thirty minutes.

Who:      7th – 10th grade volleyball players in KPS Schools

When:    Tuesdays and Thursdays Nov 10 - Dec 17 from 6:30 p.m. – 8 p.m.

Where:   Tuesdays @ Prairie Ridge OR Hillside Middle, Thursdays -@ Hillside Middle.

Cost:      $65.00 per registrant/ includes camp shirt 

Swim for Success & Tutor Time

Swim for Success is a program that offers both tutoring and swimming skills! This program is designed to develop swim techniques from beginner to advanced levels, and offer opportunities to increase physical fitness, improve in school, and experience a college campus. Participants will learn from some of the best swimmers and students in the nation - the Kalamazoo College Swim Team! 

Who: Youth ages 5 – 14 (max. 50 participants)

When: Monday, Wednesday & Thursday
           Session 1: September 21 – October 15
           Session 2: October 19 – November 12
           Tutor Time:                 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM
           Swim Lessons:            6:30 PM – 7:30 PM

Where: Kalamazoo College Pool, 1022 Academy St

Cost:$42/session (fee is per family)

Foot Golf

The City's Parks & Recreation Department and Red Arrow Golf Course are excited to introduce Foot Golf! Foot Golf combines elements of Golf and Soccer to create a fun-filled game that all ages can play. You can play at Red Arrow Golf Course on Saturdays from 2:00pm until dusk.



The Recreation Division offers a variety of programs including:

2015 Kalamazoo Friends of Recreation Scholarships

50% off ANY Youth Program

  • Must qualify for Free and Reduced Lunch Program and provide a valid letter/documentation from Kalamazoo Public Schools

100% off ANY Youth Program - Based on federal income guidelines

  • Must qualify for Free and Reduced Lunch Program and provide a valid letter/documentation from Kalamazoo Public Schools
  • Provide IRS 1040 from previous year
  • Provide copies of last 60 days of income (i.e. pay stubs, government assistance, alimony, child support, etc.)

  If you currently have a scholarship, it remains valid through September 30, 2015.  Information must be provided annually.

Bronson Park Master Plan Process

The City of Kalamazoo has engaged the consulting firm of O'Boyle, Cowell, Blalock & Associates to complete a historic evaluation, provide rehabilitation & maintenance recommendations, and assemble a master plan for improvements to Bronson Park in downtown Kalamazoo. This process is currently ongoing and more information may be found here
