KALAMAZOO -- The city of Kalamazoo is bulking up on its environmental credentials with the purchase of a new Ford Escape Hybrid.

The "kiwi green" SUV is a replacement for the sole vehicle used by the city's Economic Development Corporation and its Brownfield Redevelopment Authority. It is the second hybrid vehicle in the city's fleet; the first is being used by the Department of Public Services.

The Escape, which is powered partly by electricity and gets an estimated 34 miles per gallon of fuel in the city, makes economic sense in addition to being environmentally friendly, said Jerome Kisscorni, the city's economic-development chief.

"The purchase allowed us to support economic goals such as job retention by purchasing an American-made vehicle from a local provider," he said in a news release.

Parchment also recently added a hybrid to its fleet, buying a Toyota Prius last year as a cruiser for its police department.

The City of Kalamazoo is committed to advancing the public's health, safety and economic welfare by providing leadership, services, information, and support for the citizens, businesses, and visitors of Kalamazoo.
