Boil Water Advisory - 11/17/2008

Kalamazoo, Michigan, November 18, 2008 – Due to a large water main break near Kilgore and Westnedge Avenue and planned maintenance at Edgemoor water tower, portions of the City of Kalamazoo’s water system temporarily lost pressure. At this time the City of Kalamazoo Department of Public Services is issuing a boil water advisory as a precautionary measure for the area bound by the following streets:

West Main Street (north)
South Westnedge Avenue (east)
Kilgore Road (south)
US-131 (west)

This includes portions of the City of Portage west of Westnedge and north of I-94 along with the following institutions, Western Michigan University, Hackett High School and, St. Monica Elementary. Neighborhoods affected include Oakwood, Winchell, Parkview Hills, Vine and Parker-Duke. Residents are urged to boil their tap water prior to use for drinking and food preparation this means boiling water for approximately ten minutes. Temperature of the water should be above 212 degrees.

Public Services staff are monitoring the system for pressure and water quality as well as repairing the water main break.

It is anticipated that this precautionary boil water notice will remain in effect until Wednesday afternoon November 19, 2008.

CLOSURE INFORMATION

Kilgore at Westnedge is closed to through traffic between Westnedge Avenue and Duke Street. Westbound detour is Westnedge Avenue, Whites Road to Duke Street, eastbound detour is Duke Street to Whites Road to Westnedge Avenue. Northbound/southbound traffic is one lane in each direction.
