During the Fiscal Year 2009 budget cycle, City officials understood that budgetary pressures would continue to mount. To this end, City officials continue to be challenged with stabilizing the organization and balancing the budget while maintaining the principles to highlight performance of our core services.
As a result, City departments have been charged to identify budget reductions and structural changes that could help reduce the City’s expenses. Addressing these issues will prevent the organization from incurring a huge, projected shortfall that could limit the City’s ability to provide basic services to the Kalamazoo community.
This year, the budget process began with discussions with department directors and city officials and will continue through October with community meetings, again being led by the City’s Community Relations Board. These focus groups will allow residents to dialogue about what City services and priorities should be maintained during this budget cycle.
This webpage is dedicated to providing information regarding the 2010 Budget process as the City continues to uphold its goal to effectively use its resources to maintain effective basic public services.
Community Relations Board
The Community Relations Board will conduct several community forums over the course of the next few weeks to seek citizen input on how residents feel the City should go about reducing expenditures during these economically challenging times. City staff will also present a brief overview of the city’s current budget structure, “budget basics” as well as discuss the fiscal challenges facing Michigan Cities.
In addition to the community forums, CRB members conducted a random phone survey on October 12 & 19. Residents completed an online version of the survey and are also encouraged to visit this webpage for up-to-date information regarding the budget process. All data will be incorporated into a final report submitted to the City Manager’s Office by the Community Relations Board.
