New ADA Service Animal Regulations 6/1/11
Metro Transit

Kalamazoo Metro Transit provides service as required by all ADA rules.  Effective March 11, 2011, the ADA Service Animal Regulations were changed to exclude all service animals, wild or domestic, other than dogs, and further limits the work or tasks dogs perform that defines a dog's status as a service animal (28CFR Part 35).

Effective June 1, 2011, animals and purposes excluded in the revised definition will no longer be allowed on public transit vehicles, unless the animal is in an approved carrier that can be placed out of the aisle.  This means only dogs who have been individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability, including a physical, sensory, psychiatric, intellectual or mental disability will be allowed to function as service animals.
