Regulations

The City of Kalamazoo has been proactive in efforts to protect area groundwater supplies. In addition to using groundwater education and outreach efforts and other source management strategies the City has implemented groundwater protection regulations related to land use as well as stormwater runoff.

In May of 2007 the City adopted new Wellhead Protection Zoning Overlay and Performance Standards Ordinances. Using existing tools, like the Wellhead Protection Capture Zone delineations and the recently updated Contaminant Source Inventory, the City drafted new local regulations aimed at minimizing the risk to groundwater. These new measures address the risk to groundwater supplies impacted by the many well fields operated by the City of Kalamazoo.
