Western Michigan University/Kalamazoo Regional Psychiatric Hospital 


Western Michigan University's main campus covers more than 550 acres and includes 125 buildings, 22 of which are residence halls housing some 6000 students. The WMU campus also includes the KRPH facility, which occupies a portion of the University's property along Oakland Drive by way of a lease agreement with the State of Michigan.

There is no association affiliated with this area of the City of Kalamazoo.

Woods Lake Association

Woods Lake is a 26-acre lake located northwest of Oakland Drive and Parkview Avenue.  About 60% of the lake's shoreline is owned by members of the Association, while the remaining shoreline is owned by the City of Kalamazoo and the Oakwood Neighborhood Association.  Woods Lake Beach Park and Lake Park are open to the public. 

The mission of the Woods Lake Association is to preserve the ecology of Woods Lake and protect the pristine beauty of the surrounding area.

Full membership in the Association is available to property owners along the Woods Lake shoreline.  Associate membership is available to any other interested parties.

Whites Rd/Edgemoor Ave/Bronson Blvd (WEB) Neighborhood Association

The residential WEB neighborhood is located southwest of downtown Kalamazoo and consists of over 300 homes, mostly constructed in the mid-to-late 1900's.  This sought-after area has substantial homes that stand along its often-winding streets.  It lies within the broader boundaries of the Westnedge Hill area.

Westwood Neighborhood Association

The Westwood neighborhood is located in the northwest corner of the City of Kalamazoo.  Its boundaries include Friendship Village to the north and West Main Street to the south, Turwill Lane to the east and Drake Road to the west.

Westnedge Hill Neighborhood Association

Westnedge Hill is a residential neighborhood of approximately 1100 homes, and is one of Kalamazoo's most historic areas. The neighborhood is situated at one of the highest points in the City of Kalamazoo, and is characterized by a variety of single-family home styles along sometimes winding roads. Westnedge Hill is bound by Howard Street to the north, Cork Street/Whites Road to the south, Bronson Boulevard to the west, and S. Burdick Street to the east.

The Westnedge Hill Neighborhood does not have an active association at this time.

West Main Hill

The West Main Hill Local Historic District is a unique Kalamazoo neighborhood notable for its naturalistic curvilinear land planning and layout, exceptional period revival houses, and association with Kalamazoo's industrial, commercial, and society leaders. Its early twentieth­ century suburban landscape and architecture is anchored by earlier grid planned streets with late nineteenth century homes. The product of a local businessman's vision, the Henderson Park plat is the largest curvilinear plat in Kalamazoo, and represents a very progressive approach to land development for its time. The houses lining its streets were homes of professional, civic, commercial and industrial leaders, including business owners, professors, merchants, and other members of the important upper and upper middle class of Kalamazoo's early twentieth century society. The houses and streetscapes create a park-like suburb, exclusive and expressive of the traditional values, romantic ideals, and concepts of status of the early twentieth century. Several buildings are architecturally notable as examples of their styles and type; the district as a whole is architecturally cohesive with a predominance of Colonial and Tudor Revival houses.

West Kilgore Neighborhood Association

The West Kilgore Neighborhood lies along Kilgore Road (the City's southern boundary) between S. Westnedge Avenue and Oakland Drive.  The area consists primarily of single-family homes, along with a private high school and commercial development at the neighborhood's east end.  The Association was formed in 2004 in order to represent the interests of property owners during the reconstruction of Kilgore Road.

The association is not active at this time.

Vine Neighborhood Association (VINE)

Vine neighborhood is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Kalamazoo. Some of the area's earliest homes were built during the 1840's.  The neighborhood is bounded by West Lovell Street to the north, Oakland Drive to the west, Crosstown Parkway to the south, and South Burdick Street to the east.

In the early 1970's, a core group of neighborhood residents joined together to address the increasing housing, nuisance, and safety problems surfacing in Vine. The purpose of creating the Vine Neighborhood Association was to promote the welfare and well being of all Vine neighborhood residents by assisting in the prevention of crime, providing information on home rehabilitation, encouraging historical preservation, and combating community deterioration.

The mission of VINE is to improve the overall quality of life in the Vine neighborhood.  VINE achieves its mission by: Building long-term residency, encouraging the renovation and preservation of our historic homes, supporting economic success, enhancing safety & security, reducing density, promoting volunteer activism, and building community by joining neighbors together.

Stuart Area Restoration Association (SARA) 

Stuart was first settled by wealthy businessmen, professionals, and craftsmen. Among them was the politician and lawyer, Senator Charles Stuart, who built his 1858 Italianate home in the area. The neighborhood's Douglas Avenue was named after Senator Steven Douglas, a prominent guest of Senator Stuart.

The Stuart area is part of the Stuart Neighborhood/Henderson Park Historic District and contains over 350 buildings ranging from Queen Anne to Renaissance style architecture and includes Italianate, Gothic, Greek, and Colonial influences. This area was one of Kalamazoo's earliest neighborhoods beginning in the 1850's.

The mission of SARA is to preserve our historic neighborhood and improve the quality of residential life through mutual cooperation and involvement.

Southside Neighborhood

As the name suggests, this Kalamazoo neighborhood lies to the south of downtown.  It is a largely residential neighborhood, including several historic homes. 

The neighborhood's southern boundary is Crane Park, which offers hilltop views of the downtown, as well as flower gardens and tennis courts.  Crosstown Parkway serves as the north boundary, including the Crosstown Justice Center at Crosstown and S. Burdick Street.  Burdick is the Southside's eastern boundary, and offers several shops and restaurants.  The neighborhood's west boundary is S. Westnedge Avenue, where there are additional, convenient shopping opportunities.

Historically, the Southside area was one of Kalamazoo's flower-growing districts.  Today, a single pansy farm still exists.  This is the only remaining business of its kind within the City of Kalamazoo.

The Southside neighborhood does not have an organized association at this time. 

South Westnedge Neighborhood

Kalamazoo's South Westnedge neighborhood offers a variety of housing opportunities with convenient access to local shopping and dining.  Its boundaries include Whites Road to the north, Oakland Drive to the west, Kilgore Road to the south, and the railroad tracks that run roughly parallel to the east of S. Burdick Street.

Parkwyn Village Association

Parkwyn Village is located on the west side of Kalamazoo, in the southwest corner of the Winchell neighborhood.  Winchell surrounds Parkwyn on its north, east and south sides.  The area's western boundary is Asylum Lake.  Parkwyn Village consists of approximately two dozen single-family, period residences along two streets: Parkwyn and Taliesin Drives.  The Parkwyn Village Association exists to promote the integrity of the area's natural and architectural assets.

Parkview Hills Neighborhood Association

Parkview Hills is located is southwest Kalamazoo, just minutes from both I-94 and US-131.  The neighborhood was built in the1970's as a planned community including a variety of housing styles and amenities.  Single-family homes, attached and detached condominiums, and apartment buildings are all set amidst a natural environment of woodlands, meadows, marshlands and waterways.  It is an ideal neighborhood for enjoying wildlife and outdoor recreation.

The neighborhood also includes a restaurant and several shops.  Additional shopping and dining are located just 1/2 mile away at the intersection of Oakland Drive and Parkview Avenue.  Residents of Parkview Hills are members of the Willow Lake Club, which includes both indoor and outdoor fitness and recreation facilities, and space for meetings, classes and social gatherings.

Parkview Hills is bounded by Parkview Avenue to the north and Limekiln Lake to the south, the Oakwood neighborhood to the east and Western Michigan University's Business, Research & Technology (BTR) Park to the west.

Parker/Duke Neighborhood

The Parker/Duke neighborhood is a moderate income neighborhood of mostly single-family homes and several apartment complexes, 1 charter school and 2 private schools.  It lies within the boundaries of the larger South Westnedge neighborhood.

The Parker/Duke boundaries are Whites Road to the north, Kilgore Road to the south, S. Westnedge Avenue to the east, and Bronson Boulevard to the west.

Oakwood Neighborhood Association

Oakwood was founded in 1908 and incorporated in 1947.  It is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city of Kalamazoo.  It has almost 900 homes and businesses, and is located in the southwest corner of the city.  Neighborhood boundaries include Parkview Avenue to the north and Edgewood Street to the south, Oak Ridge Street to the east and Wood Street to the west.

The Oakwood Neighborhood Association facility includes an office, community room, and youth/family resource room. The office is staffed by a half time director and volunteers.  The Association is active in providing programs such as after school activities, senior drop in, Friends of Woods Lake, holiday theme parties, annual reunions, free bread distribution, holiday food baskets, Building Blocks of Kalamazoo, and Adopt A Park.  The Association also produces and distributes a monthly newsletter.

The mission of the Oakwood Neighborhood Association is to promote neighborhood leadership, responsibility and civic interest among the people of the community; and to provide assistance and support for resident participation in programs, projects, and events designed to better the quality of life for all residents of Oakwood.

Oakland Drive - Winchell Neighborhood Association (ODWNA)

Lovely residential neighborhoods define the Oakland-Winchell area.  Notable architectural styles, from Greek Revival to Tudor to Mid-Century Modern, mix with Cape Cod, Colonial, Spanish and Ranch to create a vibrant and harmonious streetscape.  This is a neighborhood where you'll see mature trees and open spaces, holiday luminaries, community garage sales, monthly social hours, gardens and flowers, walkers with dogs, kids on their bikes, ponds and lakes, nature preserves and parks, and neighbors of all ages. Oakland-Winchell is a great place to grow up and a great place to grow older.

The Oakland-Winchell area extends from Stadium Drive/Howard Street to the north to Parkview Avenue to the south.  Its western boundary is Asylum Lake.  The eastern boundary includes Kleinstuck Marsh and Pikes Pond.

Northside Association for Community Development (NACD)

The Northside neighborhood is located north of downtown Kalamazoo and is home to over 6000 residents.  The residents enjoy 3 public parks and the services of several local businesses.  The northside has the largest concentration of social service providers serving Kalamazoo County, including the Family Health Center, Douglas Community Association, Deacons Conference, and New Genesis.

The mission of NACD is to advocate and promote a healthier environment, job creation, financial independence, safety, and neighborhood revitalization.

Milwood Neighborhood Watch Association

Milwood is a large neighborhood offering a variety of housing opportunities, recreational activities, and shopping destinations.  The area consists primarily of single family homes, along with strategically located apartment complexes.  Milwood residents enjoy easy access to family-oriented attractions and activities, such as Milham Park and an adjacent 18-hole golf course.   The neighborhood's boundaries are Miller Road to the north, Kilgore Road to the south, Sprinkle Road to the east, and S. Burdick Street to the west.

The mission of the Milwood Neighborhood Watch Association is to focus resources on serving this part of the community with an emphasis on deterring crime and its effects.  More information about the work of the Association is available by using the contact information below.

Knollwood Neighborhood

The Knollwood neighborhood is located in west Kalamazoo, directly adjacent to Western Michigan University.  Knollwood is home to a high concentration of college/university students living in multi-family homes, apartment buildings, and sorority/fraternity houses. Students enjoy easy access to Knollwood Park, WMU, and a variety of shopping, dining, and entertainment venues along W. Michigan Avenue and other nearby arteries.

Knollwood does not have an active association at this time.


Homecrest Circle Neighborhood Association

The Homecrest Circle neighborhood is located west of Portage Street, between Roseland and Homecrest Streets.  It is a small, residential setting with fewer than 40 homes in the western portion of the Milwood neighborhood.  Portage Creek runs along the neighborhood's western boundary.

Hill N Brook Neighborhood

Kalamazoo's Hill 'N' Brook neighborhood is located amidst the gently rolling hills and small, picturesque waterways of southwest Kalamazoo.  The area's homes are mostly single family residences.  Convenient access to local amenities is just moments away along Oakland Drive, which serves as the neighborhood's eastern boundary.  To the west, Lake Hill 'N' Brook serves as a western boundary.  The northern boundary is the adjacent Parkview Hills and Oakwood neighborhoods, and the southern boundary is found south of the City limits.

Hill N Brook does not have an active association at this time.


Gateway Coalition/South Street Historic District

Neighborhood boundaries
Academy Street to the north, West Lovell Street to the south, South Westnedge Avenue to the east, and Oakland Drive to the west.  This neighborhood is also a component of the Central Business District.

Fairmont Neighborhood 

(served by the Douglas Neighborhood Association) 

The Fairmont neighborhood is located just east of downtown Kalamazoo and includes over 900 homes and 1200 residents.  The neighborhood's population is as diverse as its architecture.  Its residents represent a diverse mix of cultural background, while the area's homes include both historic and modern styles.  Its first homes date back to the 1850's.


To provide an open, inclusive, diverse and democratic association that will serve our neighborhood and improve quality of life by:

  • Seeking out neighborhood opinion and concerns and advocating on behalf of residents, 
  • Improving public safety,
  • Fostering relationships and interaction between our diverse residents,
  • Working to improve the aesthetics and environmental quality of our neighborhood.

Edison Neighborhood Association

The Edison neighborhood is located southeast of downtown Kalamazoo and is home to over 9000 residents.  It is Kalamazoo's largest neighborhood by population, and is also home to Kalamazoo County's largest Hispanic community.  Edison lies between East Michigan Avenue to the north and Miller Road to the south, and between South Burdick Street to the west and the City limits to the east. Within the neighborhood, over 200 local businesses serve the needs of Edison residents and visitors.  Two Kalamazoo Public Schools elementary facilities are located here as well.

Notable sites in Edison include the Kalamazoo Farmers Market and many historically significant structures.  The Washington Square Branch of the Kalamazoo Public Library and the Portage Street Fire Station are two of the most recognized, while many homes in the neighborhood are also historic.  Public parks are also significant features of the neighborhood including Upjohn Park (the location of Kik Pool and the Able-to-Play playground), Mayors' Riverfront Park, Reed Street Park, and Southside (formerly Peter Pan) Park.

Eastside Neighborhood Association

The Eastside neighborhood is a hilly and wooded urban residential neighborhood that hosts small scale community businesses. The Kalamazoo River runs along its western and southern borders, while its eastern boundary is shared with Kalamazoo Township.

The Eastside Neighborhood Association is dedicated to improving the lives of those who live in the neighborhood by maintaining and/or improving the economic and social qualities that make people proud to say "this is our neighborhood!"

Colony Farm

Colony Farm is located in the southwestern-most corner of the City of Kalamazoo.  The neighborhood is bisected by US-131.  A small, residential neighborhood with several dozen homes lies to the west if US-131. Western Michigan University's Business, Technology & Research (BTR) Park is located to the east of the Highway.

Colony Farm does not have an active association at this time.


Downtown Kalamazoo, Inc.

Kalamazoo's Central Business District (CBD) is the centerpoint of southwest Michigan's largest metropolitan area.  Nearly 15,000 people work in the CBD, and approximately 1,200 people call downtown their home - most reside in loft apartments and condominiums.  Lodging is also abundant, including a range of both hotel and bed & breakfast options.

The CBD is home to dozens of unique dining and specialty shopping destinations, as well as to many of the area's arts and entertainment amenities.  The Kalamazoo Mall serves as the main thoroughfare for enjoying downtown life.  Adjacent areas also provide a unique variety of experiences - from a concert at Bronson Park to the one of a dozen annual festivals at Arcadia Creek Festival Place, and from the galleries of Park Trades Center to the live concerts at the Kalamazoo State Theater.  There is much to do in downtown Kalamazoo for those who live, work, and visit here!

Downtown is roughly bounded by Lovell Street to the south, Pitcher Street/King Highway to the East, Willard Street to the north, and Michikal Street/Stadium Drive to the west.

Burke Acres

Burke Acres is located in the northeastern-most corner of the City of Kalamazoo.  Its boundaries include the City limits to the north and east, Gull Road to the south, and the Kalamazoo River to the west.  Features of the neighborhood include Averill Lake and Spring Valley Lake, which is located within Spring Valley Park, the City's latest park.  Burke Acres consists primarily of moderate-income, single-family homes.  This makes it an idea place for individuals and families to purchase a first home.  Convenient shopping, dining, and services are available along Gull Road.

Burke Acres does not have an active association at this time.

Arcadia Neighborhood Association

Arcadia Neighborhood includes about 400 single-family homes on the west side of Kalamazoo. Residents enjoy a neighborhood elementary school, convenient access to many city venues, an adjoining youth soccer complex and tree-lined streets.

To provide support for and give a united voice to the interests and concerns of the residents of the single-family, owner-occupied homes located in that region of the City of Kalamazoo known as the Arcadia neighborhood.
