Apply for Temporary Structure Permit

Temporary structures larger than 120 square feet that will be used for an event or gathering of 10 or more people must be permitted. This makes sure they are safe and properly secured, with clear exists and fire extinguishers nearby. This includes tents, canopies, air-supported structures like (bounce houses or slides), and structures supported by cables or frames. 

A detailed layout of the site should be included with this application. Please also include the written manufacturers specifications regarding installation of the temporary structure.

The fee for a Temporary Structure Permit is $125 for up to three structures. Each additional structure will be $25.The permit fee includes the needed inspection, however if additional inspections are needed a $90 fee will be assessed.

Before you submit an application, make sure you have the information you'll need. We will ask for a site plan or layout with the location of temporary structures and things like the location of fire extinguishers & hydrants, other buildings nearby, exits, electrical equipment, and number of people expected in the structure. We will also ask for the manufacturer's specifications for installation and a certificate of flame resistance for each structure (if you are renting the structure, the rental company should have these). 

Step 2.Submit an Application

Print and complete the Application for a Temporary Structure Permit and return it by mail to:

Make sure you include all supporting documentation and sign the application. You can also scan the application and email it to development@kalamazoocity.org.

Step 3.Review & Approval

Your application will be reviewed by our Building & Trades staff and the Fire Marshall, who may contact you if additional information is necessary. If your permit is approved, you will be notified by mail and receive an invoice with the total permit fees. Payment instructions will be included with the invoice. Review and approval of permits can take up to two weeks.
