Kilgore Road is now open to two-way traffic. Thank you for your patience while we completed this important infrastructure project!
An improvement project on Kilgore Road between Oakland Drive and Westnedge Avenue will include milling and resurfacing with new asphalt, narrowing vehicle lanes, and widening bike lanes. The bike lanes will also be extended from Oakland Drive to just before the Westnedge Avenue intersection. Curbs will be repaired, and sidewalk ramps will be upgraded to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. In addition, structural adjustments will be made to level the roadway surface and improve stormwater flow.
This section of Kilgore Road is at the southern part of Kalamazoo and northern part of Portage connecting residents, businesses, and travelers going east and west. It has an annual daily traffic flow between 6,500 to 9,000 vehicles and has numerous residents and businesses along the route.
The two-inch mill and resurface along with other improvements on Kilgore Road will maintain the roadway’s usage and improve flow of all methods of travel. It will also prevent further deterioration of the road before it would become significantly more costly to replace in the future.
As part of the city’s complete streets commitment, non-motorized enhancements are included in road repaving projects whenever possible. The non-motorized improvements included in this project will give bicyclists and pedestrians more access to Kilgore residences, businesses, and transit facilities and encourage reduced, safer traffic speeds.
