Ransom Street Phase I (Walbridge to Pitcher) Water and wastewater utility infrastructure will be upgraded along Ransom Street and the street will be reconstructed with an emphasis on placemaking and making the area friendlier for pedestrians. In 2024, a second phase will continue this project west to Westnedge Avenue. Announcement : The first phase of the Ransom Street project is nearly complete and the street has been reopened. Thanks for your patience during this major investment in our city's infrastructure! In 2024, the project will continue westward from Pitcher St to Westnedge Ave.
Riverside Cemetery Paving More than five miles of paved roads within Riverside Cemetery will be reconstructed, resurfaced, or preserved as needed based on their condition. Announcement : This work will occur late fall 2023 or in the spring of 2024. Work will be completed by Memorial Day 2024.
Safe Streets For All Traffic Calming Grant The City of Kalamazoo was awarded a Safe Streets for All Grant to pilot traffic calming measures and create a comprehensive plan to make city streets safer for everyone.
Sidewalk Repair and Construction The Foundation for Excellence is providing more than $1 million to repair sidewalk and close gaps in the sidewalk network. Announcement : Most new sidewalk construction has been completed for the year, with only Northampton Rd remaining. ADA ramp and landing work on Riverview was added to the contract but will be completed in the spring. Crews are currently finishing the last sidewalk repairs on Portage St. Work will be finished by the end of October.
U.S. EPA River Cleanup at Verburg Park EPA is overseeing the removal of PCB-contaminated sediment within Verburg Park Pond and along the banks of the Kalamazoo River. This work is part of a larger cleanup of a section of the Kalamazoo River. Announcement : Work at Verburg Park is wrapping up, but the park will remain closed (including the boat launch) through November 30, 2023 for restoration.
W Michigan Ave Lighting & Preparatory Work Lighting will be added to W Michigan Avenue between Drake Road and Howard Street. Existing lights will be upgraded to current standards, and other minor preparatory work will be completed before more significant work on W Michigan Avenue (currently scheduled for 2024). Announcement : The City Commission approved the lighting agreement with Consumers Energy, and we are awaiting the work schedule from Consumers. We anticipate lighting work will happen late this fall or early spring 2024.
W. Michigan Ave (Stadium Drive) Resurfacing – Lovell to W Main St Scheduled to start April 3: Mill and resurfacing of W. Michigan Ave from Lovell St to near the Academy St intersection, with spot curb & gutter replacement, sidewalk repairs, curb ramp construction, pavement markings, and installation of pedestrian crossing signs and rectangular rapid flashing beacons (RRFB). Announcement : This project has been completed.
Westnedge Ave Water Main and Reconstruction Water main replacement on Westnedge Avenue has been delayed and is now expected to begin in March 2024. It will also bring improved features for pedestrians, traffic signal improvements, and measures to reduce speeding. Announcement : This project has been rescheduled and is now expected to begin in March 2024.
Whites Rd Water Main & Reconstruction A water main replacement project on Whites Road will begin with work near the Oakland/Whites Parkview intersection in 2023. The project will continue down Whites to Westnedge in 2024 with a road diet converting the street to a three-lane configuration. Announcement : Work has stopped for the winter and Parkview Avenue and Whites Road are reopened. We have some traffic signal work that will continue and be completed by about mid-January. We will be able to adjust both the signal phasing and the overall operation of the signal, which will improve traffic flow. Water main and work on Whites Road will resume in 2024 heading east to Westnedge.
