Social Justice Youth Awards

Social Justice Youth Awards 2020

The Social Justice Youth Awards recognize students that have demonstrated commitment and leadership in the areas of racial and social justice. The awards are presented by the Kalamazoo City Commission as part of the community celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Students from the Kalamazoo-area between the ages of 12-19 may be nominated for the Social Justice Youth Awards for activities, volunteerism, and commitment to causes that promote justice and equity for everyone. Nominations are accepted from adults who work with youth, like teachers, advisers, mentors, or coaches.

The City of Kalamazoo presents a Social Justice Youth Award on honor of Dr. Lewis Walker, a trailblazer for the progression of racial equity in Kalamazoo. Additional awards are presented by the program sponsors. Winners also receive a $300 scholarship.

Awards are presented at the City Commission meeting following Martin Luther King Day in January. This meeting always takes place on a Tuesday.
