Hydrant flushing

The City of Kalamazoo works 24/7/365 to operate and maintain our public water system. As part of this regular maintenance, the entire system is flushed twice per year through water hydrants.

Because our water comes from underground it naturally has high mineral content. Over time these minerals can accumulate in the water mains and narrow the path that water can flow to homes and businesses. This accumulated sediment can also get stirred up during construction or other maintenance and cause discoloration in your home.

When the hydrants are flushed, the water in the water mains is stirred up and these accumulated sediments are forced out of the system through the hydrants. During the flushing program, our team also checks the pumps, storage tanks, mains, valves, and hydrants in the system to ensure that all components are functioning properly.

The Hydrant Flushing Program doesn't affect the safety of water but tap water may appear cloudy or discolored immediately after flushing occurs. If you experience this, run cold water in your utility sink or bathtub until the water runs clear again. We recommend that you do not use your washing machine for 24 hours after flushing occurs in your area to avoid potential discoloration of clothing.

Hydrant flushing occurs roughly over the course of a week each Spring and Fall usually overnight between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. A map and schedule are made available before the program begins. Information about the hydrant flushing program is also included in the View from the Curb

If you have scheduled construction during hydrant flushing or any questions related to the program, please call 311 or (269) 337-8000.
