Apply for Outdoor/Sidewalk Dining Area

Outdoor dining areas create places to socialize, dine, and for us come together as a community. Kalamazoo's standards for outdoor dining help ensure that these areas meet City requirements for accessibility, safety, walkability, parking and loading, aesthetics, and noise. They also make sure that outdoor dining areas consider and complement the neighborhood they're located in.

A permit is required for outdoor dining to ensure these standards are being met. If you would like to offer an outdoor dining area for your customers, please review the guidelines and follow the process below to apply.

Step 1.Review the Outdoor Dining Guidelines 

Before you submit an application please review the Outdoor Dining Guidelines(PDF, 4MB). They cover the application and review process, plus requirements related to design, hours of operation, accessibility, and other considerations.

Step 2.Submit an Application

Complete and submit the application along with an Outdoor Dining Area Plan, a Street Patio Traffic Control Plan, and proof of Insurance/Liability Coverage. More information about the documents required to apply is available in the Guidelines above.

Step 3.Application Review

Applications are reviewed by City staff to ensure the proposed outdoor dining area will meet the requirements. If the plans include an electrical connection or a platform, the City's electrical and building inspectors will review the plans also. 

Applications will be reviewed and either approved or denied within 10 business days. Applications requiring review by electrical and/or building inspectors will be reviewed and either approved or denied within 15 business days. 

Step 4.Payment of Fees 

After approval, applicants will be invoiced for the fees associated with their outdoor dining area. Current fees are included with the guidelines above. Invoices can be paid in person, by mail, or online.

Step 5.You're All Set

Once the fees are paid, your permit will be issued and you can install your outdoor dining area and begin serving customers. Remember that all outdoor dining materials must be removed from the right-of-way at the and of the outdoor dining season (December 1).
