Register to Vote

All eligible voters in the City of Kalamazoo are encouraged to vote in every election! You can register to vote online, in person, or by mail. 

To be eligible to register to vote you must be:

  • A Michigan resident (at the time you register)
  • A resident of the City of Kalamazoo for at least 30 days (when you vote)
  • A United States citizen
  • At least 18 years of age (when you vote)
  • Not currently serving a sentence in jail or prison (after completing a sentence you can participate in elections without restriction)

If you're not sure if you're registered, you can check online at the Michigan Voter Information Center.

Within 14 days before an election, all applications must be submitted to the Kalamazoo City Clerk's Office in person, and you must provide proof of where you live. Documents must have your name and address (you can also show a digital copy). Acceptable documents include:

  • Michigan driver's license or state ID
  • Current utility bill
  • Bank statement
  • Paycheck or government check
  • Other government documents

Step 1.Make Sure You Are Eligible

Make sure you meet the eligibility requirements listed above. To register online, you must also have a valid Michigan driver's license or state ID. If you don't have one, you can still register in person or by mail. 

If you are registering within 14 days of an election, you must register in person and show proof of residency.

Step 3.City Clerk Processes Application

The Kalamazoo City Clerk's Office will issue you a voter registration card upon processing your application. It will contain your information and where to go to cast your ballot. Sometimes polling locations can change so it's always a good idea to double check before going to vote.

You're ready to vote! Make a plan to vote in upcoming elections in the City of Kalamazoo. The Michigan Voter Information Center is a great online resource for voting. You can check your polling location, view sample ballots, verify you're registered, confirm absentee ballots have been received, and more.

Complete the Michigan Voter Registration Application.

You can also call 311 or (269) 337-8000 and we will be happy to mail you an application. Applications are also available at the following locations:

  • Kalamazoo City Clerk's Office at City Hall (241 W South Street) 
  • Kalamazoo County Clerk's Office (201 W Kalamazoo Avenue) 
  • Secretary of State branch offices
  • State agencies that provide public assistance or services for people with disabilities

If you have never registered to vote in Michigan and mail your application, you will need to include additional information to verify your identity. Follow the instructions included with the application and make sure you sign it.

For Students

If you're from Michigan and attend school here, you can register to vote at your school address or your home address. 

If you're from Michigan and attend school outside the state, register at your home address in Michigan.

If you're not from Michigan but go to school here, register to vote at your school address in Michigan.

If you have a Michigan driver's license or state ID and you are registered to vote in Michigan, your voter registration address and the address on your license or ID will be the same. If you change your address on one, it will automatically change on the other. The Secretary of State will mail you a new address sticker to place on your license or ID card.
