2026 Historic Preservation Awards of Merit

Kalamazoo's Historic Preservation Commission presents Awards of Merit every year to recognize Historic Preservation Month in May. Learn about the people and projects who were recognized in 2026 below. 

Blair Bates: Blair Bates is being recognized for more than four decades of leadership in historic masonry restoration, preservation education, and stewardship. Through his work with Building Restoration Inc. and Building Renovation LLC, Blair has helped preserve hundreds of historic buildings throughout Kalamazoo, including homes, churches, schools, civic buildings, and landmarks. Beyond his restoration work, he has dedicated his career to teaching others the skills and principles needed to preserve historic structures for future generations, making a lasting impact on both the built environment and the preservation community.

Lynn Houghton: Lynn Smith Houghton is being recognized for her lifelong commitment to preserving and sharing Kalamazoo's history. As a historian, educator, author, curator, and preservation advocate, Lynn has spent decades helping residents connect with the people, places, and stories that define the community. Through public lectures, walking tours, publications, service on local preservation commissions, and her work as Regional History Curator at Western Michigan University, she has inspired generations of residents to appreciate, protect, and celebrate Kalamazoo's historic resources
