Historic Preservation Tax Credit

Owners of properties in either national or local historic districts may apply for the State Historic Preservation Tax Credit coordinated through the Michigan State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). 

General Information

  • The tax credit can cover up to 25% of the cost of interior or exterior improvements on historic buildings.
  • Owners of properties in national or local historic districts may apply.
  • This state credit will be available for private residences
  • A limited amount of state tax credits are available and are first-come, first-serve each year.
  • Applications open Monday, January 23 at 9 AM

How to Apply

A three-part application process is used to apply for the State Credit. It is similar to the parts used for the Federal Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit, but is a separate application.
