The City of Kalamazoo is undertaking routine maintenance on the Gull Road Bridge, which spans the Kalamazoo River. This essential infrastructure project aligns with Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) standards to ensure the long-term usability and safety of the bridge.
To complete this work safely and efficiently, a temporary signal and flaggers will be in place to shift traffic to one side of the bridge at a time, and traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction.
The planned maintenance activities include:
Gull Road is a critical link in Kalamazoo’s street network. With the city’s ongoing conversion of downtown streets to two-way traffic, it is essential to maintain alternate routes like Gull/Ransom, North, South, and Lovell Streets to efficiently distribute traffic flow. Ensuring the structural integrity of the Gull Road Bridge will help sustain this connectivity for decades to come.
This project is made possible through a combination of federal, state, and local funding. Additionally, the City of Kalamazoo has collaborated with the City of Battle Creek to secure resources for bridge improvements in both communities, demonstrating regional cooperation to enhance public infrastructure.
Project Benefits:
Work on the Gull Road Bridge will be scheduled in coordination with MDOT and city planning efforts to minimize disruptions to traffic. Advance notice of the closure, detour routes, and project schedule will be shared to keep the community informed.
