Civil Rights Board

The Civil Rights Board reviews allegations and violations of the local Non-Discrimination Ordinance and Fair Housing Ordinance. The Board also makes recommendations to the City on how practices or policies that lead to discrimination can be changed. The Civil Rights Board was created in September 2020 following updates to Chapter 18 of the Code of Ordinances. 

Board Member Residency Requirements: Members appointed to the Board shall be residents of the City reflecting and representing the diversity of the Kalamazoo community and be able to demonstrate experience in civil rights, public accommodation, employment, disability or housing law. Members to the Board may be appointed who are not City residents, not to exceed two members, when there is a valid reason for such appointment, such as the member works in the City, or has special expertise to carry out the duties and responsibilities of the Board.

The Civil Rights Board meets on the first Wednesday every other month at 5 p.m. in the City Commission Chambers at City Hall.
