Inkster Street Bridge Construction to Start Monday, March 18

Published on March 13, 2024

The Inkster Street Bridge over Bronson Boulevard will undergo a complete reconstruction starting this Monday, March 18. Bronson Blvd. will be closed at the bridge while the old structure is removed, and the new bridge is built. A detour will be posted directing drivers around the construction via Howard St. or Kilgore St. to Oakland Dr.

The project is scheduled to be completed in early September and Bronson Blvd will remain closed during the structural bridge work. City engineers anticipate it will be able to open before the bridge is fully complete and will provide additional information as the project progresses.

The current bridge was closed to vehicles in 2020 due to concerns about its structural integrity. The new bridge structure will be made from concrete, which will be more resistant to the elements and longer lasting. Elements of the bridge design were chosen with feedback from nearby residents in 2022.

Community members can find more information about this and other construction projects, like those currently underway on Westnedge Ave., Whites Rd., and Ransom St., at www.kalamazoocity.org/projects. Each project page also allows users to subscribe and receive email notifications when updates are posted.

City staff will also host an open house on Tuesday, March 19, at Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan at 601 W Maple Street. The event will provide community members an opportunity to ask questions and discuss ongoing road construction projects with city engineers and project managers from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

To reduce the impact of road construction and promptly address concerns, community members are encouraged to report any issues related to construction, including instances of speeding through neighborhoods, by calling 311 or (269) 337-8000 or by sending an email to hello@kalamazoocity.org.

City staff appreciate the community’s patience and flexibility during these important infrastructure investments. Businesses remain open and accessible near and in construction areas, and community members are encouraged to continue supporting our city’s local businesses. Please plan ahead, stay informed, and drive carefully in construction zones.
