Kalamazoo Opens Applications for Next City Manager

Published on August 18, 2025

The City of Kalamazoo has officially launched the recruitment for its next City Manager, who will succeed James Ritsema following his retirement in November 2025. A comprehensive brochure highlighting the position, its responsibilities, and the Kalamazoo community is now available for potential applicants.

Applications are being accepted electronically through Raftelis, the national executive search firm assisting the City in this recruitment. Interested candidates can apply here. The online application includes a brief form and prompts to submit a cover letter and resume. The position will remain open until filled, with the first review of applications beginning September 12, 2025.

Raftelis will review candidates based on criteria developed from community surveys, stakeholder input, and discussions with City Commissioners. The City Commission will review qualified candidates and invite a group of up to five finalists to visit Kalamazoo for a series of engagement opportunities, including a community meet-and-greet, a tour of the city, and interviews with the City Commission. Following these steps, an offer will be extended to the candidate deemed the best fit for the City.

“This is an exciting opportunity to lead Kalamazoo into its next chapter,” said Commissioner Alonzo Wilson. “We are looking for a City Manager who understands our community, shares our values, and can guide our organization with vision and integrity. The feedback we’ve received from the community has been a key part of shaping this search.”

Community members still have the opportunity to share their input through the City Manager survey. The survey will remain open until midnight on Sunday, August 24, and responses will help the City Commission understand the qualities, values, and priorities that matter most to residents in selecting Kalamazoo’s next City Manager. The survey is available online at www.kalamazoocity.org/CityManagerSearch, and paper copies can be found at City Hall.

The City Commission remains committed to a transparent, community-informed selection process. Materials, updates, and information about opportunities for public engagement are available at www.kalamazoocity.org/CityManagerSearch.
