The City of Kalamazoo and Road Commission of Kalamazoo County primarily use video detection systems for traffic control at intersections (cameras to trigger when a vehicle approaches). It is helpful to know information such as vehicle color, time of day, and the weather to help diagnose potential issues at video controlled intersections.
If nearby streetlights, houses, and businesses do not appear to have power, there is likely a power outage affecting the area.
Traffic signals are programmed to flash red in all directions in the event of equipment failure. Please drive carefully treat any signal flashing red as a stop.
Traffic signal timing concerns are generally issues related to signal timing (such as the green light is not long enough or poor progression between signals) and not detection concerns (such as waiting too long for a green light).
During a power outage, please drive defensively. Michigan law indicates that a vehicle already in the intersection has the right-of-way as do vehicles on through highways. Beyond this, the vehicle on the left shall yield to the vehicle on the right.
Please do not treat this as an all-way stop.
Red Yellow Green
Please ensure your vehicle's front bumper is stopped just behind the stop bar when approaching an intersection. Vehicles stopped to far away from the stop bar may not be detected/trigger a green light.
Please indicate which street you are crossing and from which side of the intersecting street you are on.
