Yard & Campaign Signs

If you’re planning to show your support for a candidate or cause, make sure you know the local rules that apply to campaign signs. Campaign signs are allowed, just be aware of a few simple requirements:

  • Signs cannot be placed in the right-of-way or project into it. This is generally means you cannot place signs on the street side of the sidewalk. If there is no sidewalk, the right-of-way generally extends 33 feet from the center of the street.
  • Signs must be placed on private property.
  • Signs in residential districts cannot exceed 6 square feet.
  • Signs in commercial districts cannot exceed 6 square feet without obtaining a sign permit.
  • The total sign area on any on property cannot exceed 36 square feet (the total area of all temporary signs).
  • All signs must be removed within 30 days following the election.

Signs placed outside of these guidelines may be removed without notice. For more information, see Chapter 3 (Advertising) and Chapter 50 Article 9 (Signs) of the Code of Ordinances.
