Streets for All

It’s time to reconnect Kalamazoo’s downtown to its surrounding neighborhoods. It’s time to update the infrastructure underneath the roads for years to come. It's time to build streets that invite everyone in, and give them a reason to stay.

Streets For All is the guiding principle as Kalamazoo reimagines its downtown: not to patch what exists, but to build what's needed for the next century. The most visible work will be updates to key roads including Kalamazoo Ave., Michigan Ave., W. Main St. — converting them to two-way traffic with improved parking, modern roadway design, and safer sidewalks for everyone who uses them.

In addition to the street-level updates, we’re taking the opportunity to update infrastructure that's invisible to most people, but crucial to everyone. Beneath those roads sit water mains, pipes, and communications infrastructure that in some cases haven't been touched in 70 to 100 years. Streets For All replaces and upgrades all of it: water and wastewater systems, stormwater infrastructure, and internet connectivity for businesses, residents, and visitors. When we tear up the road, we rebuild everything underneath it right.

Streets For All didn't start at City Hall, it started with you. Through the Imagine Kalamazoo planning process, thousands of residents, business owners, and neighbors shared what they wanted downtown to become. Their input shaped the designs. Their priorities drive the timeline. This is Kalamazoo's plan, built by Kalamazoo's people.

We’re undertaking this transformation for the people who are here today and the generations who will call this city home long after the construction cones are gone.

Streets For All Projects

Streets for All: Kalamazoo Ave (2026-2028)

Kalamazoo Ave will be entirely rebuilt with completely new utilities and infrastructure, and a two-way street design that is safer and more comfortable for everyone, making downtown easier to navigate.

Streets for All: W Main St/Douglas Ave (2026-2027)

W Main St & Douglas will be entirely rebuilt with modern utilities and infrastructure, and be converted two-way streets that are safer and more comfortable for more people. This will also open up new turning movements and better connect the northwest neighborhoods.

Streets for All: Michikal Street (2027)

2024 work on Michikal was the first step towards converting several downtown streets to two-way. In 2027, additional work on the street will ahappen alongside work to address flooding from Arcadia Creek, then it will convert to two-way traffic.

Streets for All: Michigan Ave (2028-2029)

After Kalamazoo, Michikal, W Main, and Douglas create an initial two-way network, Michigan Ave will be rebuilt with completely new utilities and a new two-way design that makes it easier and safer for people to travel, and more inviting to visitors.

"Spaghetti Bowl" Intersection (2029-2030)

The design process is about to begin a Streets For All project on West Michigan Avenue, South Street, and Lovell Street in Downtown Kalamazoo, the area commonly known as the “Spaghetti Bowl” intersection.
