Announcement

The results are now posted along with raw survey data, a feedback summary, and concept designs for the different types of projects. The selected projects are listed below with their anticipated construction or installation.

In 2023 the City of Kalamazoo was awarded a $750,000 Safe Streets for All Grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation. The grant will be used to finalize some current planning work, pilot several traffic calming measures, and ultimately develop a comprehensive plan to reduce roadway deaths and serious injuries. $260,000 of matching funds have been committed to this project from the City budget from FFE and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

  • Northside - 2 speed tables, trial pedestrian refuge area, and 7 speed humps
  • Westnedge Hill - 3 speed humps, and will revisit mini traffic circle design with neighborhood

Neighborhood Traffic Calming Proposed Locations

Arboretum Pkwy

The map below shows speed hump or speed table locations being considering on Arboretum Parkway. These would be off-set, meaning of each pair shown on the map, one would affect each direction of traffic only.

Edison Neighborhood

The map below shows speed hump or speed table (red circles) and mini traffic circle (green circles) being considering in the Edison Neighborhood. Speed humps or speed tables on major streets would be offset, meaning that for each pair, only one would affect traffic in each direction.

Eastside Neighborhood

The map below shows speed hump or speed table locations being considering in the Eastside Neighborhood. Since these are local streets, they would be across the entire street and each location would affect both directions of traffic.

Northside Neighborhood

The locations noted on the map below are being considered for traffic calming measures in the Northside Neighborhood. Red circles represent speed humps or speed tables, and the orange square represents a trial refuge island (a safe place in the center of the street so people only need to cross one direction of traffic at a time). If speed humps or tables are installed on Paterson, they would be off-set, meaning each would only impact one direction of traffic. Speed humps or tables on neighborhood streets would span the entire width of the roadway and affect both directions of traffic.

Inkster/Wilshire/Alta Vista

Maple Street

Fraternity Village Drive Area

The locations below are being considered for speed humps or speed tables on Fraternity Village Drive and California Avenue. They would span the entire width of the roadway and affect both directions of traffic.

Bicycle Amenities Proposed Locations

Stadium Drive Cycle Track

In 2024, we are planning to pilot a two-way cycle track on Stadium Drive from Howard Street to Rambling Road. The track would accommodate both directions of bicycle traffic on the north side of the street. It would utilize shoulder space on the road and would not affect existing vehicle lanes on Stadium Dr.

Lovel Street Cycle Track

In 2024, we are planning to pilot a two-way cycle track on Lovell Street from Pitcher to Stadium Dr. The cycle track will be marked with paint and sections of a Qwik Kurb product consisting of a hard plastic curb with reflective posts. The cycle track will be marked in bright green through intersections.

The two vehicle lanes will remain the same and on-street parking will be maintained on the south side of the street throughout. The north parking lane from Pitcher to Westnedge will remain and will transition to a loading zone in some areas near businesses. Where the road narrows west of Westnedge, on-street parking would be removed on the north side of the street to accommodate the cycle track.

Ravine Rd Protected Bike Lanes

We are considering adding temporary curb on Ravine Rd from Douglas Ave to the City Limits to protect this connection between the KRVT and the Kal Haven Trail. The curb would protect the bike lanes in both directions.

Westndege & Park Protected Bike Lanes

We are considering adding protective curb to the bike lanes that currently exist on Westnedge Ave and Park St from Kalamazoo Ave to Dutton St. The curb would help protect people riding bikes in the lane, and would maintain access to all drives.

Oakland Dr Protected Bike Lanes

The map below shows a section of Oakland Drive being considered for protected bike lanes. Temporary curbs would be installed in this area to create a barrier between bicyclists and drivers. Access to all drives would be maintained. If installed, the project would be evaluated quarterly and adjusted as necessary.

Crosstown Pkwy Protected Bike Lanes

The map below shows a section of Crosstown Pkwy being considered for protected bike lanes. Temporary curbs would be installed in this area to create a barrier between bicyclists and drivers. Access to all drives would be maintained. If installed, the project would be evaluated quarterly and adjusted as necessary.

The map below shows proposed location for pedestrian refuge islands. Refuge islands help pedestrians cross the street by creating a protected area between lanes of traffic. A list of locations is also provided below the map.

How is Feedback Used?

Your feedback is important to the success of this project, and we will consider all comments to determine support in these areas. We'll move forward in areas where there is broad support over areas where we hear there is not a need for traffic calming, or these proposed options won't work.

 

We will be making decisions based on overall feedback, but please know we consider and value every response. Just because we may move forward in a way that you disagree with does not mean we didn't read, consider, and appreciate your perspective and your time.  

 

Our goal is to make streets safer for everyone to use. We will consider all ideas as long as they can meet design and engineering standards.
