  • Project schedule2024-2027

In 2023 the City of Kalamazoo was awarded a $750,000 Safe Streets for All Grant (SS4A) from the U.S. Department of Transportation. The grant was used to complete some planning work, pilot several traffic calming measures, and develop a comprehensive plan to reduce roadway deaths and serious injuries. $260,000 of matching funds have been committed to this project from the Foundation for Excellence and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Safety Action Plan

The SS4A grant program helps local communities develop a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan to guide transportation safety improvements. The Action Plan focuses on proactive tools and adopts the Safe System ApproachIt will help unlock federal funding in the future to make successful safety improvements permanent.

Pilot project locations helped provide before and after data to support the Safety Action Plan. The Plan focuses on topics like lighting, intersection safety and improvements, traffic calming, and bus stop improvements.
