There is no May 7 Election for voters in the City of Kalamazoo. In Kalamazoo County, only voters in Mattawan Consolidated Schools, Plainwell Public Schools, and Mendon Public Schools have an election on May 7.
Week of April 29, 2024: work is continuing on Phase 2A/2B, and the crew is currently installing a new 42-inch concrete sanitary sewer pipe under the roadway. This work continues the improvements to the flow capacity that started last year. Near the end of the week, storm service laterals will be installed between Burdick St and East Rose St.
Wastewater, water, and storm water utilities will be upgraded from Pitcher to Westnedge and Ransom Street will be entirely rebuilt with an emphasis on placemaking and significant improvements for pedestrians and non-motorized users, new lighting, and better parking.
This project started in 2023 with work completed from Walbridge to Pitcher St. Utility upgrades in this area began in 2017 as part of the River's Edge Roundabout project at the intersection of Harrison, Gull, and Ransom.
Ransom Street is a historically important street in the Northside neighborhood, and it's a major street in the Northside Cultural Businesses District. This project will make the street much safer and more inviting. Most of the sidewalks in the project area will be replaced, they will be made wider in business areas, and new sidewalks will be added where needed. New lighting will be installed in the area, and curb bump outs will make crossings easier and protect parking areas. Trees in poor condition will be replaced, and when the project complete there will be twice as many trees lining the street. The railroad crossings will also be rebuilt in coordination with Grand Elk Railroad, and all amenities installed will be ADA compliant. The roadway will be narrower in most areas to accommodate these changes.
Due to the scope of this project, it will require full and partial closures during various parts of the project. The project is jointly funded from the City's Major Streets, Water, and Wastewater funds.
