2026 Local Streets

City crews pave a street in the Northside neighborhood

The City of Kalamazoo performs several types of roadway maintenance each year to preserve streets, improve driving conditions, and extend the life of existing pavement. The type of work performed depends on the condition of each roadway.

Mill and Repave Projects

The following local streets will be milled and repaved this year. Milling removes the worn surface of the existing pavement before a new layer of asphalt is placed, creating a smoother ride and extending the life of the roadway.

  • Greenleaf Blvd
  • Winton Ave (Portage to Lincolnshire)
  • Lincolnshire Blvd (Winton to Cork)
  • Lowden St (Parkview to end)
  • Edwards St (Paterson to Dunkley)
  • Myrtle St (Pitcher to Porter)
  • Bridge St (River to Dwight)
  • Garland Ave (Westnedge to Rose)
  • Bosker Ave (Cobb to Westnedge)
  • Cobb Ave (Paterson to Dunkley)
  • Bessie St (Westnedge to Park)

Work on these projects is anticipated to begin in July and continue throughout the construction season.

Street Patching Projects

In addition to resurfacing, several streets will receive significant pavement repairs through either spray patching or heavy patching, depending on the condition of the roadway.

Spray patching is a fast, cost-effective repair used to address smaller potholes and localized pavement deterioration before they become larger problems. A specialized truck cleans the damaged area, sprays asphalt emulsion and stone into the defect, and applies a final layer of aggregate. This method allows crews to quickly repair many small areas while minimizing traffic impacts.

Heavy patching is used where pavement damage is more severe. Crews remove the failed section of asphalt, repair the underlying pavement if needed, and replace it with new hot-mix asphalt. Although it requires more time and equipment, heavy patching provides a longer-lasting repair for larger potholes and areas where the pavement has begun to fail.

City engineering staff determine which repair method is most appropriate based on the condition of each roadway. Using the right repair at the right time helps maximize the life of City streets while making efficient use of taxpayer dollars.
