The City of Kalamazoo is investing approximately $1.5 million in sidewalk improvements in 2026 as part of its ongoing commitment to safety, accessibility, and neighborhood connectivity. This year’s project includes targeted sidewalk replacement, new sidewalk construction, and additional improvements at locations throughout the city.

Major components of the 2026 program include:

  • Academy Street (Rose Street to Park Street): Replacement of sidewalk on the north side of Academy Street
  • Kilgore Road (Milham Park to Portage Street): Construction of a new sidewalk on the north side of Kilgore Road to close a gap and create a continuous pedestrian connection between Milham Park and Portage Street.
  • Portage Street (Kilgore Road to Paddington Road): Construction of a new sidewalk on the west side of Portage Street, extending north from Kilgore Road to Paddington Road to improve pedestrian access and safety.

In addition to these highlighted segments, dozens of additional sidewalk improvements will occur citywide. Specific locations are still being finalized and will be shared once confirmed.

These investments will:

  • Improve pedestrian safety Increase accessibility and ADA compliance
  • Close gaps in the sidewalk network
  • Improve connections between neighborhoods, parks, schools, and commercial areas
  • Enhance overall walkability throughout the city

By strategically investing in sidewalk infrastructure, the City is working to create a safer and more connected community for people of all ages and abilities.
