The Burdick Street Water Main Replacement Project will replace aging water infrastructure between Emerson Street and Lovell Street over two construction seasons (2026 and 2027).

The project will replace two smaller water mains with a single 24-inch transmission main along Burdick Street. Currently, this corridor contains multiple water mains of varying sizes that were installed at different times. The project will standardize the system with a single 24-inch transmission main, improve the efficiency and reliability of water distribution through this important north-south corridor, and eliminate an aging 10-inch water main that has experienced multiple water main breaks.

Additional work will include replacing fire hydrants, completing water service improvements, installing sanitary sewer lead two-way cleanouts, and making storm sewer improvements where needed to maintain required separation between utilities.

Sanitary sewer replacement is planned for the section of Burdick Street between Vine Street and Lovell Street as part of a later phase of construction in 2027. That work will improve the existing sewer infrastructure and prepare the corridor for long-term reliability.

Following utility work, the roadway will be restored with asphalt resurfacing, along with spot curb, gutter, sidewalk, curb ramp, and pavement marking improvements.

Construction Schedule & Impact

Construction on the first phase will begin August 3, 2026.

The 2026 project will extend from Emerson Street to Stockbridge Avenue. This revised construction area was established after the initial project received no responsive bids due to contractor availability for specialized work required at the Crosstown Parkway intersection. The revised limits allow the project to move forward while connecting the new 24-inch water main installed on Balch Street in 2024 to the Central Water Treatment Plant near Stockbridge Avenue.

Water main construction will begin between Balch Street and Emerson Street, while crews complete other work throughout the project area.

Local access will be maintained throughout construction, although temporary traffic restrictions and driveway impacts may occur as work progresses.

The second phase, extending from Stockbridge Avenue to Lovell Street, is planned for 2027 and will include the remaining water main replacement along with sanitary sewer replacement between Vine Street and Lovell Street.
