Burdick Street Water Main Replacement Project

  • Project value$15.2M (FY2025 DWSRF Contract)
  • Project schedule2026-2027
  • Contractor nameSWT Excavating

The project will replace and consolidate existing water mains with a new 24-inch transmission main along Burdick Street. Currently, this corridor contains a mix of pipe sizes, including 10-, 12-, 20-, and 24-inch mains, installed at different times. The project will standardize pipe sizing, consolidate multiple mains where possible, and improve the system’s ability to transmit water efficiently through this key north–south corridor.

In addition to water main improvements, targeted sanitary sewer work will be completed as part of this project. At the intersection of Burdick Street and Vine Street, sewer improvements will be constructed to prepare for a future project that will increase the size of the sanitary sewer main west of Burdick Street. Sanitary sewer cleanouts will be installed at individual properties along the corridor. These cleanouts provide an accessible connection point to the sewer lateral, making it faster, easier, and less disruptive to maintain or service sanitary sewer lines in the future.

  • Replaces aging and inconsistent water main infrastructure
  • Consolidates multiple pipe sizes into a consistent 24-inch transmission system
  • Improves long-term reliability and capacity of the water distribution network
  • Reduces future maintenance needs along Burdick Street
  • Prepares sewer infrastructure for future capacity upgrades
  • Adds sewer cleanouts to reduce impacts of future maintenance work
  • Reduces the need for future roadway disruptions

Construction Schedule & Impact

Construction is anticipated to begin in summer 2026, pending final design and bidding. This phase will cover Burdick Street from Emerson Street on the south end to Vine Street on the north end. Work is expected to begin near Stockbridge Avenue, starting with a tie-in to the nearby Central Water Station on the south side of Stockbridge, then proceeding south to Emerson Street. After completing the southern segment, crews will return to Stockbridge Avenue and continue construction north toward Vine Street. Construction will be completed in small phases to reduce impacts.

Local access will be maintained throughout the project. Short-term, full street closures may be necessary during certain construction phases, but access for residents and businesses will be preserved. The exact start date will be finalized after bidding is complete.

A second phase, covering Vine Street to Lovell Street, is planned for 2027. This segment will be bid as a separate project, likely later in 2026 or early 2027.
