"Spaghetti Bowl" Intersection (2029-2030)
- Project value$3,000,000 (Design Phase, funded by federal RAISE Grant)
- Contractor nameWightman (Project Design)
The City of Kalamazoo is beginning the design process for a major transportation and infrastructure improvement project along West Michigan Avenue, South Street, and Lovell Street in Downtown Kalamazoo, including the area commonly known as the “Spaghetti Bowl” intersection.
This project is part of the City’s broader Streets For All initiative, a coordinated series of projects focused on modernizing aging underground infrastructure, improving safety and accessibility, and creating a more connected, people-focused transportation network throughout Downtown Kalamazoo.
The project will convert sections of West Michigan, South, and Lovell streets from one-way to two-way traffic while modernizing infrastructure and improving conditions for people walking, biking, rolling, taking transit, and driving.
Project Goals
The project is intended to:
- Improve safety and ease of travel for all roadway users
- Create stronger connections between Downtown and surrounding neighborhoods
- Support economic vitality and future investment
- Improve accessibility and navigation throughout the area
- Modernize underground utilities and aging infrastructure
- Create streets that are more comfortable, welcoming, and people-focused
Community Engagement
Community engagement will play a major role throughout the design process, just as it has for projects on Kalamazoo Ave, Michigan Ave, W Main, and Douglas. Residents, businesses, property owners, and community stakeholders will have opportunities to help shape the future of these streets through public meetings, workshops, and other engagement activities.
Additional information about engagement opportunities and project concepts will be shared as the design process moves forward.
Project Funding
The design phase of this project is funded through a federal RAISE (Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity) Planning Grant awarded to the City of Kalamazoo in partnership with the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT).
Current Status
The Kalamazoo City Commission approved a contract for project design services in 2026. Preliminary design and community engagement activities are expected to begin soon.
More project details, timelines, design concepts, and engagement opportunities will be added to this page as they become available.
