Phase 1 of improving Michikal Street is complete! We upgraded the northern portion of the roadway and added a non-motorized path along the north side in 2024. Next up, in phase 2, reroute Arcadia Creek and finish the southern portion of Michikal St.
The Michikal Street Project is part of the City of Kalamazoo’s broader Streets For All initiative to modernize infrastructure, improve connectivity, and create a transportation network that is safer and easier to navigate for everyone. The project will ultimately convert Michikal Street to two-way traffic while improving conditions for people walking, biking, rolling, and driving. Improvements include roadway reconstruction, utility upgrades, and enhanced non-motorized connections through this important corridor near downtown Kalamazoo.
Construction began in 2024 with the first phase of the project, which focused on rebuilding the northern portion of the roadway and adding a new shared-use path along the north side of the street.
The second phase of the project is planned for 2027 and is being coordinated with a major flood reduction and infrastructure improvement project along Arcadia Creek, which runs adjacent to Michikal Street. Because the Arcadia Creek project includes significant underground infrastructure and stormwater improvements in the same area, the Michikal Street project was intentionally divided into two phases. This coordinated approach helps avoid reconstructing newly completed roadway infrastructure and reduces long-term disruption for the community.
Michikal Street will become part of a connected two-way street network once related projects on Kalamazoo Avenue, West Main Street, and Douglas Avenue are completed.
