All rental housing in the City of Kalamazoo must be registered and certified. This helps us make sure it is safe and sanitary for renters in our community. Before signing a lease or moving into an apartment or rental property, check to make sure that its registered and certified. If you find unregistered properties listed for rent, please let us know so we can make sure the property owners know their responsibilities to rent in the city.
If a property is listed as "Not Issued" please call 311 or (269) 337-8000 to double check its status.
Rental certification status is one of many things you can find online using the BS&A Online Portal. Click the link below to go directly to the Rental Property Search.
Search for Registered Rental Properties
From the BS&A Online Rental Property Search page, you can search for properties based on address or the name of the agent, responsible party, owner, or management company name. Enter the information you wish to search by and click the search button.
The search results page will list all properties that meet your search criteria (which may only be one result if you search for an address). This page will show the name of the agent, owner, and holder of the certificate. It will also show the certification date and when that certification expires.
If you are not able to locate a property though this search, it may be unregistered and listed for rent in violation of city ordinances. If you run into this situation, please let us know so we can reach out to the property owner and let them know the requirements for renting housing in the city.
