Tenant Responsibilities 

Like all residents in Kalamazoo, as a tenant you have some responsibilities to keep our community safe and welcoming: 

  • Keep your rental unit in safe and sanitary conditions.
  • Keep your yard free of trash, litter, and debris.
  • Only place items in the curb lawn for pickup during the designated times for your area (learn more).
  • Put your trash and recycling carts at the curb the night before your collection, and take them back after collection the next day.
  • Do not park vehicles on your lawn or blocking the sidewalks.
  • Shovel your sidewalks within 48 hours of snowfall in the winter to keep our neighborhoods connected.

Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Smoke & carbon monoxide detectors are REQUIRED in all structures with fuel fired furnaces or appliances, and any structures with an attached garage. Test these detectors at least once a month to make sure they are functioning properly and have working batteries. Detectors must be installed in every sleeping room, outside each sleeping room, and at least one on every floor.

Legal Aid of Western Michigan 

Legal Aid of Western Michigan provides free legal advocacy for eligible people in Kalamazoo, which can include issues related to housing. If you need legal help, you can contact them at (269) 344-8113 or by visiting www.lawestmi.org.

Eviction Diversion 

Eviction Diversion is a collaborative program to help tenants pay overdue rent and stabilize their housing situation. You must be no more than three months behind rent, and you must be bale to sustain rent payments after being assisted. if you are facing eviction, call 211 to be screened for eligibility for this program.

Issues With Your Property 

If you have an issue with your rental unit, please follow the instructions here. You should provide written notice to your landlord or property manager and provide them a reasonable amount of time to respond before contacting the City. 

Protection from Lead 

Some older homes in Kalamazoo may still have lead paint, which over time can deteriorate into dust that is poisonous if you breathe or eat it. You can find resources to help protect you and your family from lead here
