Buzz in the Zoo Sign Contest
‘Buzz in the Zoo’ is looking for you to help us make Kalamazoo a Pollinator Paradise! Help us design a yard sign that neighbors can use to spread the word about the importance of flowers, native plant habitat, and our flying friends. The competition is open to elementary school, middle school, high school, and college students in Kalamazoo, and one winner from each age group will be chosen to have their designs displayed in ‘Buzz in the Zoo’ participant yards.

Who can enter?
Students who are in elementary school, middle school, high school, or college may enter the yard sign contest. Students must also reside within Kalamazoo County to be eligible. No submissions will be accepted from outside age groups or individuals residing outside of Kalamazoo County.
How to participate?
To add your design to the contest, an online submission form must be filled out on our city website. Parent/Guardian consent must also be provided (if under 18) in the form to allow the City to showcase your artwork on signs.
Contest Timeline
Submission Deadline: May 8, 2026 at 11:59 PM. No late submissions will be accepted.
Winner Announcement
One student from each age group will be selected to have their art on yard signs that will be distributed to the community. These students will be notified ahead of time via email and announced on the city website and social media accounts. A set number of signs will have each category’s winning design, and it is first come first serve. Buzz in the Zoo participants will be able to choose their preferred yard sign design on that day and can begin displaying the signs in their yard.
Design Requirements
Designs should align with the theme Pollinator Paradise, emphasizing native plants and pollinators. Signs should promote the message of Buzz in the Zoo with a focus on its elements and benefits:
- Native Plants and Pollinators
- Community Solidarity/Connection
- City Beautification
- Wildlife Habitats
Designs must also include:
- The event title: Buzz in the Zoo
- Space for City Logo’s and event QR code (two 3in x 3in squares)
- Clear, bold visuals that are eye-catching from a distance
Submission Information
- Dimensions: Ensure your design is created within the standard 18x24 inch dimensions for yard signs.
- Ensure all text is within at least ¼-½ inch away from the margins.
- File Name Format: Name the submitted file with your last name, first name, name of the event, and the year. (Example: Smith_John_BIZ2026)
- For digital art: submit a PDF file.
- For hand-drawn designs: Submit a clear, high-resolution photo or scan of your artwork. The photo should be well-lit and free of shadows or glare. Place your design on a flat surface in natural lighting for the best results. If unable to submit a digital photo, you can also drop off a physical art piece with the city at 245 N Rose St (the rest of digital form still should be submitted). We have large paper available at the city and other neighborhood locations!
NOTE: Please no generative AI art or unoriginal work for this contest.
Judging
Designs will be evaluated and selected by a committee from the city’s Sustainability Department.
