CPED Offices, KDPS Records Relocating to Renovated Crosstown Center

The City of Kalamazoo's Community Planning & Economic Development (CPED) offices and the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) Records Division and Police walk-up service window are relocating to the Arthur Washington Jr. Crosstown Center at 150 E. Crosstown Parkway, creating a centralized location for planning, permitting, inspections, development services, and public safety records and customer services.

To complete the move, CPED offices will close at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 27, through Wednesday, July 29. Staff will resume most operations on Thursday, July 30, with the facility's new public lobby opening on Monday, August 3.

Residents, contractors, developers, and business owners should be aware of the following temporary service changes:

  • CPED offices will be closed Monday, July 27 at 11 a.m. through Wednesday, July 29.
  • CPED phone and email service will resume on Thursday, July 30.
  • Permit applications can be submitted online at any time throughout the move. Permit payments should be made online or by mail during the transition.
  • All other CPED-related payments will be handled by the City Treasurer's Office at City Hall from Monday, July 27, through Friday, July 31. Beginning Monday, August 3, all CPED payments will be accepted at the new office at 150 E. Crosstown Parkway.
  • Beginning Monday, August 3, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety (KDPS) Records Division and police walk-up service window will be accessible through the new public entrance on the renovated side of 150 E. Crosstown Parkway.

"This move represents an important step toward providing a more convenient and welcoming experience for the residents, businesses, and developers we serve," said City Manager Malcolm Hankins. "The new facility brings key services together in one location, improves accessibility, and gives our staff the resources and space they need to better serve our community."

The relocation is part of the City's $11.2 million Arthur Washington Jr. Crosstown Center Workplace Remodel, which is transforming approximately 43,250 square feet of the former County Courts building into a modern municipal workplace while also renovating portions of the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Headquarters.

Once fully open, the renovated facility will feature:

  • A welcoming public lobby for CPED services
  • A dedicated public service area for the KDPS Records Division and police walk-up service window
  • Service windows and a business center
  • Modern meeting rooms for residents, businesses, and community organizations
  • Centralized offices for planning, permitting, inspections, and development services
  • Ample free parking for visitors
  • Flexible space to support future City needs

The Crosstown Center Workplace Remodel project also modernized portions of KDPS Headquarters with updated workspaces, meeting rooms, training facilities, and support areas for public safety personnel.

By bringing related City services together under one roof, the Crosstown Center will improve collaboration between departments while making it easier for residents, businesses, contractors, and developers to access City services in a modern, accessible facility.
