Backflow preventers keep water from flowing backwards into our water system, and using one is required when accessing water through a hydrant. If you need to access water through hydrant (often for certain construction and utility processes), you can request a backflow preventer to use. City staff will install it when and where you need it. The fee of $200 is due prior to service with extensions available if needed.
Complete a brief request form and return it to the City's Public Services facility at 415 E Stockbridge Ave. You can pay the fee by check, credit card, or cash when you return the application.

City staff will deliver and install the backflow preventer as requested. We install these within one to three days, or on the date requested, but installation is subject to availability and scheduled on a first-come-first-served basis.
The backflow preventer will come with two two inch ball valves. The valve on the customer side will have a two inch female iron pipe fitting. You will need to supply any adapters that will be needed.
When you're finished, you return the device to the City's Public Services Facility, or call us to arrange for pick up. Devices that are not returned or are damaged may be assessed a charge of $3000 and/or the customer will be responsible for replacement costs.
