We flush the water system every spring and fall to remove minerals that accumulate in water mains and improve water flow. Flushing doesn’t affect water safety, but you may want to delay doing laundry to avoid potential discoloration of clothing. The City of Kalamazoo is planning a utility and roadway reconstruction project on John Street between Crosstown Parkway and Lake Street. This project includes significant underground utility upgrades, culvert improvements, and full roadway reconstruction to modernize infrastructure and improve long-term reliability in the corridor. These improvements will modernize aging infrastructure, reduce maintenance needs, improve accessibility, and enhance the long-term function of the corridor.
Construction will be coordinated to occur during the summer break to help minimize impacts to Kalamazoo Valley Community College (KVCC) and surrounding properties. The primary impacts will be along John Street. Local access will be maintained throughout construction, though traffic will be affected during various phases of work.
Crosstown Parkway will also be impacted during a portion of this project while crews complete work within the intersection of Crosstown Parkway and John Street.
This project addresses aging utility infrastructure and roadway conditions in a complex area where sanitary sewer lines cross Axtell Creek.
The existing sanitary sewer inverted siphon and utility crossings require replacement and realignment to improve system reliability and reduce future maintenance demands. Revisions to the Axtell Creek culverts will also improve long-term performance of the stormwater and roadway systems.
Coordinating underground utility upgrades with full roadway reconstruction ensures the corridor is rebuilt comprehensively, reducing the need for future disruptions and extending the lifespan of the street and associated infrastructure.
