With each project we make our streets safer, our utilities more reliable, and move our community closer to its vision. You can view current and upcoming city projects below. Capital investments made by the city are outlined in its Capital Improvement Program. It's part of the city budget where these large scale projects are budgeted over the next five years. You can always find budget and funding information for the next five years there, too.

Streets for All

In the coming years, the city will change the streets to make Downtown Kalamazoo more welcoming for everyone. It will be easier and safer to get around, and the area will be more lively and fun. These changes will help the local economy and support local businesses, too.

Streets for All: Kalamazoo Ave (2026-2027)

Kalamazoo Ave is one of several streets that will be entirely rebuilt in the coming years and be converted from one-way, high-speed traffic to a two-way street that is safer and more comfortable for more people.

Streets for All: Michigan Ave (2027-2028)

Michigan Ave is one of several streets in Downtown Kalamazoo that will be reconstructed in the coming years to modernize infrastructure and create a safer and friendlier street for everyone.

Streets for All: Michikal Street (2024)

2024 work on Michikal will be the first step towards converting several downtown streets to two-way.

Announcement : We're excited to share that Michikal St is back open to traffic. Please note that it is still one way for now.

In the coming years, there will be additional work on Michikal to reroute Arcadia Creek and finish the southern portion of the street. It will eventually convert to two-way traffic after several other nearby projects are completed.

Streets for All: W Main St/Douglas Ave (2026)

W Main St & Douglas are two of several streets that will be entirely rebuilt in the coming years and be converted from one-way, high-speed traffic to two-way streets that are safer and more comfortable for more people.

Traffic Calming (Safe Streets for All)

The City of Kalamazoo was awarded a Safe Streets for All Grant to pilot traffic calming measures and create a comprehensive plan to make city streets safer for everyone.

Based on traffic data and your feedback from Phase 1, we’ve identified proposed focus locations for improvements in four key study areas: bus stops, lighting, intersections, and sidewalks. Water System Corrosion Control Treatment Optimization

Kalamazoo's water is treated with phosphate to coat the inside of pipes and prevent metals from leeching into the water in our homes and businesses. This project will optimize that treatment process.

Westnedge Ave Paving (Michigan to Vine)

Westnedge Ave will be milled and repaved in 2025 between Vine St and Michigan Ave.

Announcement : Asphalt paving is scheduled for Saturday, August 16, from Michigan going south to Vine. The project is on track for completion in August.

Crews are currently finishing up the concrete curb and sidewalk on the west side of the street, as well as traffic signal work. After paving, there will be some final utility work to make a smooth surface when driving over manhole covers.
