Downtown Kalamazoo Placemaking A placemaking initiative is currently underway to make new, vibrant spaces downtown and connect different hubs of activity. Announcement : The construction contract for the Farmers Alley and Rose Street plazas was approved on March 2, 2026, with construction expected to begin in spring 2026. The schedule for the other locations has not yet been determined and will depend on when funding is secured.
Eastside Water Treatment & Water Main (Station 5 & 14) The City of Kalamazoo is making a $60 million investment to build a new water treatment plant and replace critical water mains on the east side. This project will remove PFAS, iron, and manganese, consolidate water stations, and ensure safe, reliable drinking water for decades to come. Announcement : Humphrey Street between Trimble Avenue and Hazard Avenue will be closed from Monday, July 6 until Monday, July 27 for water and storm sewer infrastructure improvements. Access to all homes and businesses will be maintained and detour routes will be signed.
